Glossary

The terms Paiso uses, in plain words.

A

Account
A place that holds money or debt: a checking account, a credit card, a brokerage account, a loan.
Analyst consensus
The average rating that market analysts give a stock, such as buy or hold, with their price targets.
Asset
Something you own that has value: cash, investments, a home, a vehicle.
Asset mix
How your assets divide among types, such as cash, brokerage and retirement accounts.

B

Balance
The amount in an account right now. For a debt, the amount you still owe.
Beta
How much a stock moves compared with the market. A beta above 1 means it moves more than the market.
Budget
The amount you plan to spend in a category each month.

C

Cash flow
Money coming in minus money going out over a period.
Category
A label for a transaction that says what it was for, such as Groceries or Housing.
Cost basis
What you paid for an investment, in total.
CSV file
A plain text file of rows and columns. Most banks can export your transactions as one.

D

Day change
How much a holding's price moved since the previous market close.
Dividend yield
The dividends a stock pays in a year, as a percentage of its price.

E

EPS
Earnings per share: a company's profit divided by its number of shares.
Equity (in a property)
The property's value minus what you owe on its mortgage.
ETF
Exchange-traded fund: a fund that holds many investments and trades on an exchange like a stock.
Expense
Money you spend. A transfer between your own accounts is not an expense.

G

Gain or loss
The current value of an investment minus its cost basis.

H

Holding
One investment you own in one account, such as 40 shares of a stock.

I

Income
Money you receive, such as a paycheck.

L

Liability
Something you owe: a credit card balance, a loan, a mortgage.

M

Market cap
The total value of a company's shares: share price times number of shares.
Mutual fund
A fund that pools money from many investors and is priced once a day.

N

Net savings
Income minus expenses for a period. What you kept.
Net worth
Everything you own minus everything you owe.

P

P/E ratio
A stock's price divided by its earnings per share. Forward P/E uses expected earnings.
Portfolio
All of your accounts and assets, taken together.

R

Return
An investment's gain or loss as a percentage of its cost basis.

S

Sankey chart
A chart that shows flows as bands. In Paiso, it shows income flowing into spending categories and savings.
Savings rate
The share of your income you kept: net savings divided by income.

T

Ticker
The short symbol that identifies a stock or fund on an exchange.
Transaction
One movement of money in an account: a purchase, a deposit, a payment.
Transfer
Money moving between two of your own accounts, such as a credit card payment. It is neither income nor an expense.
Two-factor authentication
A second step when you sign in: a code from an app on your phone, in addition to your password.

The lowest and highest price of a stock or fund over the past year.
